В гимназията Cave се запознава с Mick Harvey, с когото основава първата си група The Boys Next Door. В последствие името се променя на The Birthday Party. През 1983г., след преместване в Берлин, групата се разпада, а Cave и Harvey създават първата версия на Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, заедно с Blixa Bargeld, Anita Lane, Barry Adamson и Hugo Race. В този състав записват и първия си албум >From Her To Eternity (1984г.). През годините съставът на групата се променя. Няколко изпълнения на Cave са включени във филми на Wim Wenders. Сред тях са песните: Wings of Desire, Until the End of the World и Faraway... So Close. През 1989г. участва във филма Ghosts... of the Civil Dead и публикува романа си And the Ass Saw the Angel. През 1996г. групата Cave and The Bad Seeds издава албум Murder Ballads, в който е включен дуетът с Kylie Minogue – Where The Wild Roses Grow. През 2003г. е издаден албумът Nocturama.
